This talk emphasizes the fact that cancers are not only composed of epithelial cells but also stromal elements. Typically, the tumor stroma is not evaluated. However, more recent studies suggest that stroma plays a critical role in the determining outcomes. The classic example is angiogenesis, since anti-VEGF based therapies have been shown to be effective in treating breast (and other) cancers. Similarly, expression of variant forms of receptor proteins and enzymes in the stromal cells may also play a critical role in determining a response to therapy. A number of examples highlighting the importance of stromal factors in determining outcomes are presented throughout the hour long presentation.
