Calcitonin is a 32 amino acid peptide hormone, produced in the parafollicular C cells of the thyroid.
Calcitonin acts through its receptors, causing osteoclast-mediated bone resorption and calcium excretion by the kidney. The antibody is useful for the identification of calcitonin-producing C cells, from which medullary thyroid carcinoma originates.
Thyroid medullary carcinoma. The neoplastic cells show a strong staining reaction for calcitonin.
Clinical application for IR515/IS515. For identification of thyroid medullary carcinoma and thyroid C cells.
