CD42b is a 145 kDa protein restricted to platelets and megakaryocytes. CD42a, CD42b, CD42c and CD42d form a complex in the platelet plasma membrane which serves as a receptor for von Willebrand factor and thrombin, and mediates adhesion of platelets to subendothelial matrices exposed upon damage to the endothelium. Absence of the CD42 complex leads to the Bernard-Soulier syndrome. The binding sites for von Willebrand factor and thrombin lies on CD42b.
